The scenic Napa area began to swell in population in the 1850s due to a precious metal, rather than precious grapes. Many miners from the Gold Rush moved into the warm area after severe winters in the gold fields, and Napa City became established in the cattle ranching and lumber industries. The first commercial vineyard was launched 1858 and there were more than 140 wineries in the area by the end of the 19th century.
While on a honeymoon trip in 1880, author Robert Louis Stevenson described Napa Valley in his travel memoir, The Silver Squatters. He wrote, "A great variety of oaks stood now severally, now in a becoming grove, among the fields and vineyards...with the townsfolk trooping in their Sunday’s best to see the strangers, with the sun sparkling on the clean houses, and great domes of foliage humming overhead in the breeze.”
The sparkling sun, vineyards, and great domes of foliage remain today and
make Napa Valley a favorite of travelers. Nearly 5 million people visit the
valley yearly, establishing it as the second most popular tourist destination
in California (topped only by Disneyland). They come to sample fine wine from
more than 200 wineries, to take in the gorgeous scenery, to enjoy the temperate
climate, and to tour the many restored historical landmarks that are now home
to tasting rooms, shops, restaurants and museums that pay tribute to a notable
history.
